The Kraxn Blog
art, music, and tech.
A Kraxn is Viennese slang for an old jalopy, junker, or rattletrap. As a young lad, my grandmother regularly used this word to describe her vehicle. Eventually we developed own our vernacular, and Kraxn became synonymous for any old but useful tool. Amongst those I am close to, I still use this term – so its only fitting that kraxn become the name of this blog.
Likewise, blogs are now crusty old tech that are rapidly replaced by various aspects of social media. These platforms have wrapped their tentacles around our attention. They enslave many to put on their best public face, reverberate inside others echo chambers, or force them into using unwanted/unwarranted technology. A blog, though an older technology, can give users an anonymous voice and control over technology.

Kraxn.io was a blog I kept from late 2018 to early 2020. This includes my art (for example, Sketch-A-Day), music samples, a little bit of technical writing, as well as thoughts on existence. I originally wanted to keep it anonymous, but know I am fine with this blog being associated to vonnagy.com now. Because I used this for Sketch-A-Day, it also showcases my best blogging effort – blogging consecutively or one year!
For more technical details, I used textpattern for the first iteration of this blog, and luapress for the second iteration before importing everything here into wordpress. There is much to be said about both systems, I am only begrudgingly going back to wordpress now. Textpattern is a very minimal blogging system; it still uses a mysql database, but everything else is ‘hackable’ in the best sense of the word. It doesn’t have as many plugins as as wordpress, however, you’ll be doing your own tweaks to everything (but this can be fun). Its actively maintained and has a decent community.
On the other end, Luapress is a dynamic website generator. You essential write your blog post in markdown. Its great for writing – but a little more daunting if you want to use media (photo galleries are a bit of a pain). It is fast, simple, stable, and so long as you are focused on writing, its a great tool. Unfortunately, its no longer being maintained, so though it is stable, you’ll have to hack your way through the source code to get things done your way. I also used luapress on my asylon.org website.
So this will be the final home of Kraxn.io – here are the complete posts from my blog from 20 August 2018 – 03 April, 2020:
- Sketch of the Day Theme: drink (8/24/2019) - Nuagier played an important part in French winemaking history. Also known as les aficionados de la pluie, the Nuagier’s task was simple: to taste the rain. An experienced Nuagier could then advise the vintner on how best grow his crop for best taste and yield.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: tourist (8/23/2019) - Today’s theme was tourist. I immediately thought of a backpacker – so I used this photo from a stock image site a rough reference for the sketch above. This was done with a #2 pencial and cretasoft 4601 charcoal.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: lake (8/22/2019) - This is a stretch for Lake – it is really an ocean, but I am just running with the idea though thematically incorrect. Recently, Zealandia was confirmed as sunken continent. While Aussies may have you believe they are just a chain of islands off their coast, the truth is more complex. New Zealand actually lies […]
- Sketch of the Day Theme: transform (8/21/2019) - This was a goulasch soup of mediums starting with pen (phase 1), pen, ink, pencil (phase 3), and finally pen, ink, pencil, charcoal. The phase 2 looks the best to me, therefore I’ll list it first! The idea was adding a bit more to the usual electrical transformer by transforming birds in scavengers.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: engine. (8/20/2019) - Kraxn’s superior Snegine: Convert snores to electricity with our patented Decibel*2*Energy device. The louder you snore, the more energy produced! A standard snorer can create enough energy to power 5 suburban homes for a day. A family of snorers can power an entire neighbourhood! Order now and get the anti-snore taser accessory absolutely free! Here […]
- Sketch of the Day Theme: warrior (8/19/2019) - Today’s theme – all I could think about is Patti Smyth/Scandal and the Warrior. Ah the 80’s. This was done with a ball point pen.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: makeup (8/18/2019) - The original theme was mascara, but changed a few hours later to Makeup. I had already started with mascara, I found this very cute reference to a Canadian Wildlife Rescue centre looking for discarded mascara wands, as it helps clean feathers of rescued birds This was done with charcoal.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: lab (8/17/2019) - Today was just a short, short 5 minute sketch of a ‘Lab’ (pun intended) experiment gone wrong! This was mildly influenced by the strange by this really dark experiment by a Russian scientist during the cold war. I would imagine attaching a Labrador Retriever’s head to a cat’s body would spell nothing but trouble! This […]
- Sketch of the Day Theme: russia (8/16/2019) - Today’s sketch of the day was influenced by Siberia Shamans who took Amanita muscaria mushrooms. Supposedly some of these shamans collect reindeer urine as it removes the ibotenic acid (toxin) and concentrates the muscimol (psychoactive ingredient) in the mushrooms.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: machine (8/15/2019) - This is loosely based on the Canard Digérateur an automaton in the form of a duck. It can eat grain, digest and excreted the remains! This was done in pen. Incidentally, this has become my most popular sketch on the sketch-a-day, currently with 139 votes.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: shoes (8/14/2019) - Handshuhe, literally translated is ‘hand shoes’; its the German word for gloves. Audrey Hepburn reference. Charcoal
- Sketch of the Day Theme: chest (8/13/2019) - The St. Moritz mountain cat retrieves lost items on ski slopes such as keys or wallets; storing them all in a small chest. Charcoal.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: zebra (8/12/2019) - a zebra charcoal.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: yellow (8/11/2019) - This is what it would like like if you had tritanopic colour blindness. Colour pencils.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: meal (8/10/2019) - Coastal seawolves of British Columbia make a meal of seafood. Charcoal
- Sketch of the Day Theme: peacock (8/9/2019) - Aotearoa Fauna Guide # 38721, the fantail. (Piwakawaka) The New Zealand Fantail is notorious for plucking out peacock tail feathers and then taunting the assaulted birds with its squeaky-toy like song. The fantail then integrates the stolen feathers into its own tail for an elaborate mating dance. Pen.
- Sketch of the Day Theme: africa (8/8/2019) - When I was 10, we had a laser show in our gymnasium (it was the 1980s) . They played ‘Lucy in the sky with Diamonds’ and explained about the discovery of the oldest human skeleton in Africa. Between the music, light and this new knowledge, I had a strange but beautiful existential moment of being […]
- Sketch of the Day Theme: protect (8/7/2019) - The rare New Zealand fledgehog protects itself with a soft and dandering down. Its squishy form could resist the strongest blows of cricket bats and being stepped on by the heaviest of persons. The China National Space administration is currently studying its biology as a parachute-less entry system for a mission to Mars.
